STONESVILLE. MARCH 14 -- ALBERT WADE SMITH, 69, of Stoneville, a retired railroad man, died at 8:40 o'clock tonight in a Greensboro Hospital after a three-week illness.

The body was taken tonight to Ray's Funeral Home at Madison, where it remains pending funeral arrangements. Surviving are six daughters, Mrs. L.P. (sic., L.T. for Lester Talmadge) of High Point, Mrs. D.C. Lester of Stokesdale, Mrs. Will Sands of Stoneville, Mrs. J.R. Thacker of Greensboro, Mrs. Howard Carter of Leaksville, and Mrs. Jane White of Stoneville.

THE HENRY BULLETIN, Dec. 23, 1921, p. 9 [edited]. Glen Wells died in Logan, W. Va., Friday from appendicitis, and his body was brought to Martinsville for burial. Mr. Wells was 14 years old and a son of the late Jesse Wells and his wife who is a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James R. Smith of South Moss Street.

She is survived by eleven children, eight sons and three daughters - Ben Morris Smith of Asheville N.C.; Albert Smith of Stoneville, N.C.; Thomas Shelton Smith, , John W. and Henry Clay Smith of Martinsville, Va.; Charles B. Smith of Starkey, Va.; James P. Smith of Danville, Va.; Ernest Critz Smith of Gary, W. Va.; Mrs. E. C. Runyon of War, W. Va.; Mrs. O. E. Justus of Anhursdale, W. Va., Mrs. Wm. D. I had always known this John Eldridge was kin but didn't know how. He's buried in Oakwood Cemetery in Martinsville. I haven't ever been able to trace Martha & Tina. Wonder if they could have married in Rockingham Co? There must be some connection to the Smiths & Rockingham. I know there are a lot of Smith's down there. In past I found another Andrew Jackson down there but could not find any connection.

Although, Thomas N. married Martha A. Critz May 1, 1835 Patrick Co., VA and this would fit with the statement that Wm J Shelton served under his uncle Major James Critz. Not that I have found yet that Martha had a brother, James Critz....Of course there is probably another Critz connection, Haman Critz lived next door to Thomas the Saddler... ....So, will need more info on the Thomas N. ...At any rate, I can't help but think both are related to each other.

The will was presented in Court April 2, 1734 and proved by oaths of henry Beaufordand Thomas Clark.Thomas Buford,John Jones, John Clark and Garrit Daniel were sworn to appraise the estate. Inventoryand appraisement were presented to the court on July 2, 1734. Afterthis there are no further entries in the Middlesex Court Orders or other county records regarding Ralph Shelton. Hiswidow, Mary, remarried . to a Clark, perhaps Thomas or Peter . and as MaryClark made her will in Nottaway Parish of Amelia County on June 30, 1750. OnMarch 24, 1742, Ralph. s oldest son Thomas Shelton died in Middlesex leaving widow Mary and five small children. Tenyears later, on July 11, 1752, the Court ordered Thos. Clark, administrator of Thos. Shelton dec. d. to render an accounting of his administrationof the estate at the next court.Atthis July court, also, . on motion of Reuben Shelton, orphan of Thomas,Lewis Montgue is appointed his guardian.. At the August 4, 1752 court, . on motion of Josiah Shelton, orphan of Thomas, Samuel Smith is appointed his guardian.. TheOct. 3rd court continued the order on Thos. Clark for an accounting until the next session.Again onNov. 7th, . the case of Josiah, Mecajah and Thos., orphans ofThos. Shelton dec. d, Thos. Clark and Reuben Shelton, son and heir of saidThos. Shelton dec. d. was continued. Finally, on June 5, 1753, Thos. Clarkwas ordered by the court to pay the guardian of the complainants 46 pounds9 shillings 3 pence to be equally divided between them.2 Thechildren of Thomas Shelton were:

As noted previously, Reuben Shelton appears to have remained on the family land until 1770,when he sold to Henry Street.Norecord of Micajah has been discovered after May 4, 1762, when with Middlesexcourt approval he chose Ambrose Jeffreys as his guardian.4

Josiah Shelton, we think, may have gone to Lunenburg County where the Cumberland Parishtithe lists of 1769 through 1776 show a Josiah Shelton.1 In1782 Josiah Shelton was taxed in Charlotte County on 9 whites and 1 slave 2and in 1797 he left will in Halifax County, naming wife Elizabeth and 7others undoubtedly his children . Godfre Shelton, Absull** Shelton, JosiahShelton, Anne Clemments (wife of Benjamin Clemments), Ruthey Murphey, PatseyShelton and Elizabeth Shelton.3 GodfreyShelton had been on the Lunenburg tithe list of 1776, indented under Josiah,indicating that he had just turned 18.4 JosiahShelton (junior) married Fathy (Ruthy) Ford in Halifax on May 25, 1798. 5

SHELTON - Information on Absalom (Absolem,Absolom) Shelton b. ca 1770, I believe he is the son of Josiah Shelton son of Thomas Shelton from Halifax and Lunenburg Counties at various times. An Absalom appeared in the Halifax 1810 Tax List of Virginia on March 26. His wife's name is Polley ( Maiden Unknown). Known children were Absalom Jr., Nancy and Polly C. Absalom Jr., Nancy and Polly C. were known to be in Patrick County, VA by 1825.
